The Great Outdoors - Directed by Howard Deutch. Written by John Hughes
I’ve spent the weekend with family just outside of Grand Rapids soaking up sun, swimming and embracing the outdoors. I’ve basically been reveling in some much needed R & R before trekking to Nashville with a head-first slide back into the new record. Being out here without cell service or any real Internet reminds me of one of my all-time favorite movies and John Hughes classic “The Great Outdoors”. Starring the incomparably funny Dan Akroyd and John Candy, this flick captures Midwest family vacations like no other (the Chevy Chase National Lampoon’s movies come in close second). Its also the acting debut of Annette Bening, who later went on to shred numerous roles and become an award winning actor. Long story short, if you haven’t seen this one I suggest getting on it through Netflix or raiding the old family VHS collection. You won’t be sorry.
What’s your favorite John Hughes movie (written and/or directed)?
